Have you ever wondered why some hours of the day leave you feeling invigorated while others drag you down into a haze of lethargy? The enigmatic realm of circadian rhythms holds the key – an intricate internal timekeeper orchestrating our sleep-wake cycle and influencing various bodily functions throughout the day.
Understanding Circadian Rhythms:
Circadian rhythms, these 24-hour cycles woven into the fabric of our biology, dictate our natural rhythm. They dictate not only our sleep patterns but also our hormone secretion, metabolism, and even hunger cues. Governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) nestled within our brains, these rhythms respond to environmental cues like light and darkness, aligning our internal processes with the world outside (Sletten et al., 2020; National Heart, Lung and blood institute, 2022).
The Impact of Circadian Rhythms:
The importance of circadian rhythms extends far beyond just our sleep quality; they are paramount for overall health and well-being. When our internal clock ticks harmoniously with the outside world, we reap the rewards of restorative sleep, enhanced cognitive function, and improved health. However, disruptions to these rhythms can unleash a cascade of issues, including:
Sleep Disorders: Circadian misalignment often underlies common sleep disorders like insomnia (Sletten et al., 2020; National Heart, Lung and blood institute, 2022).
Mood Disorders: Disruptions to circadian rhythms can interfere with emotional regulation and exacerbate mood disorders, potentially leading to depression (Sletten et al., 2020; National Heart, Lung and blood institute, 2022)..
Metabolic & Gastrointestinal Disorders: According to Sletten et al. (2020), circadian disruptions wreak havoc on our metabolism, contributing to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and other metabolic syndromes. How? the 'mistiming of food intake,' compared to what our circadian rhythms are expecting, impairs glucose tolerance, pancreatic beta cell function, may reduce energy expenditure and can cause intestinal inflammation.
Cardiovascular Disorders: Circadian rhythms have been shown to influence the regulation of blood pressure, cardiac sympathovagal balance, platelet activation, and fibrinolysis. Disruptions here have therefore been linked to cardiac disease, and even cancer & sepsis in extreme cases (i.e. shift work) (Sletten et al., 2020; National Heart, Lung and blood institute, 2022)..
Impaired Cognitive Function: Alterations in circadian rhythms can impair cognitive function, leading to issues such as impaired alertness, memory, attention, executive function and decision-making. This increases your changes of making mistakes and having preventable accidents (especially on the road!). (Sletten et al., 2020; National Heart, Lung and blood institute, 2022).
Factors Influencing Circadian Rhythms:
Numerous factors can sway our internal clocks, including:
Behavioral Factors. Sleep hygiene practices, including light exposure, sleep-wake schedules, diet & exercise, and relaxation techniques to reduce stress can contribute to un-synced circadian rhythms in our modern world. Learning about what good practices are, and how to implement them, is vital to ensure a health circadian rhythm that is synced appropriately to our external environments. If you want to know more, our Sleep Hygiene course is a good place to start!
Social Factors. Social factors, such as shift work & travel across time zones can contribute to circadian rhythm dysfunction. Sometimes these things cannot be avoided, but CBT-I can help to explore solutions to maximize circadian rhythm synchronization.
Biological Factors. While rare, there are such things as Circadian Rhythm Disorders. Common examples of these are Advanced Sleep Phase Type & Delayed Sleep Phase Type. While these are biological in nature, there are behavioral adaptations that can be made - with the support of CBT-I - to better match your biological predispositions with your social obligations. - National Heart, Lung and blood institute (2022).
